The magnetometer
for magnetotelluric applications consists of a vector-compensated
ringcore sensor with Helmholtz coil system for field
compensation and a digital magnetometer electronics.
The coil system is manufactured of Titan to provide
high thermal stability of the compensated field. with
10ppm/°C. Sensor and electronics are integrated
in a waterproof aluminium box. (See pic. 2)
The magnetometer is interfaced by a host PC via RS232
or RS485 and can be connected to a host PC or an external
data logger. An external trigger input can be used to
synchronise the measurement of the magnetic field (e.g.
with a GPS clock). Sampling rate up to 20 vectors/sec
is possible.
Two measurement
ranges are available, which differ in the differential
non linearity (DNL). The first range covers the whole
earth's magnetic field range of +/-60000nT with a DNL
of 350pT. The second range covers a magnetic field of
+/-4000nT with a DNL of 30pT. For the second range an
automatic main field compensation is available.
Besides the magnetic field vector the temperature of
sensor and electronics box is sampled.
