Additional Information:
The Rosetta Lander Website

Due to the low gravity a highly reliable fixation of the ROSETTA Lander to the target is essential.
The lander will be equipped with two identical anchoring harpoons, attached to the central part of the landing gear.

Model of the Rosetta Lander

Anchor electronics

Qualification model of a anchoring harpoon

Each harpoon consists of four main components:
  1. The projectile (anchor), which is designed to anchor safely in a wide range of different comet materials. An accelerator  and a temperature sensor are mounted inside the anchor as part of the MUPUS experiment.
  2. The expansion cylinder: Immediately after touchdown the projectile is accelerated and shot out from the cylinder by a cartridge driven piston.
  3. The cable magazines, mounted beside the cylinder. The anchor cable including the sensor wires.
  4. The rewind system consists of a gearmotor driven coil with an angular encoder and a releasable freewheeling brake.

Volume Model of the Anchor harpoon

The main performance parameters of the Anchoring System
