The first digital fluxgate magnetometer in space was launched in 1998 with a
Progress transporter to the space station MIR. The magnetometer (under
leadership of the IWF Graz) was part of the SPRUT experiment which investigated
environmental parameters. In the first year the instrument operates inside the
MIR station. Later the instrument was installed outside the station. In this
position magnetic disturbances (especially from AC currents) are
acceptable for magnetic measurements. The Magnetometer delivers data from
hundreds of orbits up to the re-entry of the Mir into the atmosphere. Magson
delivers sensor and sensor electronics for this project.
